Main Lake - Fly Fishing Only
The main lake at Islandderry Fishery is a natural , clear water lake of 12-acres . The lake is over 400 years old and is fed by a incoming stream and natural springs. Although it has a average depth of 7 feet there is a lot of deep holes and gorges in the lake some of which as deep as 25 meters.
There is an abundance of fly life on the lake and with a good evening rise its ideal for buzzer and dry fly fishing. The trout are Rainbow trout and Canadian blue back trout ranging from 2lb to 25lb and once caught, will give anglers a run for their money putting up a good energetic fight, no matter what their size.
The lake has a lot of character and charm with the resident swans and ducks adding to the setting.
There are 10 boats available for hire or if you prefer to keep your feet on the ground try one of the jetties.
Monthly competitions are run on the main lake with cash prizes for the heaviest bag of 3 trout. Check out the Upcoming Events page for details on the next competition.
The main lake is available for hire for private competitions. Are you a club, works team etc and would like a venue to hold a competition between yourselves? Pat was fishing the main lake from the jetty using a hares ear on a
floating line when this monster took his fly. After a good 20 minute
fight Pat managed to land the fish, got his picture taken and then
released him again. Pat now holds the new record at Islandderry
fishery for the biggest fish caught and landed on the main lake!! There is bigger
trout still in the lake, up to 25lb in weight, so the record could still be beaten!
